Tips for a consistent meditation practice, without perfectionism.
From an instructor with 40+ years of experience.

Thom Walters, a meditation instructor with over 40 years of experience, shared some really interesting tips with us in episode 23 of the podcast. Here is an actionable recap.
🗝Actionable tips
Developing consistency with meditation, or any habit
Define your “Why”
If you find a “why” that resonates so strongly with you, there isn't much that's going to sway you. It'll become a non-negotiable.
The motivation however has to be intrinsic and therefore coming from you, not from someone else.
Anchor your new habit
Habit anchoring links new habits to existing routines, leveraging neural pathways for lasting change. It creates a trigger to perform the new habit consistently, making it easier to adopt. We already have existing habits (turning on the PC, making coffee, showering, etc.), so why not take advantage of them?
E.g: Meditate every day after showering, or right before turning on your computer.
Use physical cues as reminders
E.g: Place a meditation cushion in an obvious spot so that you often see it, making it easier to remember and get back to your meditation practice.
Letting go of perfectionism when meditating
If you're stressing out, like I used to, about not meditating properly, remember: You are meditating the right way, because there is no right way.
You’re successful at meditating from the moment you block out as little as one minute, you close your eyes and focus on your breath. Being distracted by running thoughts is outside of your control, but redirecting your attention back to your breath each time you notice your mind wandering is within your control, and this act of conscious refocusing lies at the core of any meditation practice.
Meditate without expectations. Forget about other people’s experiences or results coming from meditation. It will never serve us to compare ourselves to anybody else.
By the way, Thom also shared with us a value-packed Stress Relief Toolkit to help you become calmer now and in the long run. As I like to say, tranquility leads to productivity so I highly recommend checking it out. Here’s what it can do for you:
